Professional Development

EHI Training and Resource Center programs emphasize cultural competency, diversity, and inclusion training for therapists, students, and equine specialists. Some programs provide professionals with CEUs.

Culturally Competent Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (CEAP)

Culturally Competent Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is a form of experiential psychotherapy that involves interactions between individuals and horses. CEAP is directed and assisted by a licensed clinical therapist and a trained Horse Specialist.

Developing cultural competency is a first step in working effectively with at-risk clients and families. This involves learning about the cultural norms, values, beliefs, and practices of the clients served. Knowledge of, and sensitivity to cultural issues directly impacts the way clients share, and how therapists can enhance the therapeutic relationship.

Therapists observe the client's reactions to the horse's behavior to understand how clients interact with people. Horses offer immediate feedback. Their response reveals the client’s thoughts and feelings before either the client or therapist is aware of them. CEAP utilizes this relationship with the horse as a tool to mirror the client's experiences and facilitate change.

Anyone can participate in CEAP – no prior horse or riding experience is necessary. All activities are done from the ground. There is no riding involved.
